What is a Wall Chaser?

Wall chasing is a professional concrete cutting technique, which is widely used by concrete specialists.

The technique is a key step in both concrete construction and demolition tasks, being included in jobs of a huge variety of sizes, scales and using the full range of concrete types.

What is a wall chaser?

A wall chaser is a power tool, which is made to cut precise channels through concrete. But, the equipment can also be used for brickwork, masonry, and a wide range of concrete features, including both walls and floors, for example.

For instance, one of its most common uses is cutting grooves and channels into walls, in order to install electrical wiring or pipes there. The use of a wall chaser is critical here, as electric wiring and piping can only be installed after the walls have been built and are set.

The tools are hand-operated, and look and operate in a very similar way to angle grinders. Wall chasers feature a number of extremely strong blades or abrasive discs, which cut into the concrete.

What are the different types of wall chasers?

The majority of wall chasers are handheld, but you can get larger versions, depending on the task that you require them for.

The most common power ratings for wall chaser models are between 1,200 watts and 2,000 watts, and come with blade sizes ranging between 6 and 9 inches.

Different wall chasers come with different drive heads, upon which you can mount either one or two blades. Using dual blades allows you to cut a channel of the required width, in one go.

Alongside your wall chaser, you should also use a dust extraction unit. These can be connected directly to the wall chaser itself (and some wall chasers come with an in-built dust extraction unit). This is critical because the dust that is generated by masonry cutting is a serious health hazard, if inhaled. So, a dust extractor will remove this dust from the air, before you breathe it in.

Why are wall chasers beneficial in construction and demolition?

Before wall chasers were created, these tasks had to be done using hammers and chisels. As you can imagine, when cutting long chases, this process was extremely time-consuming, messy and physically strenuous.
