The Control of Pollution Act 1974 states that councils can, and must, allocate times within which works can be carried out utilising particular methods that may generate noise pollution to the local area. The works in question include:

• Erection, construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, structures or roads
• Breaking up, opening or boring under the road or adjacent land in connection with the construction, inspection, maintenance or removal of works
• Demolitions or dredging work
• Any work of engineering constructions

When can these works be carried out?

The hours in which it is permitted to carry out the above construction works are regulated in order to minimise noise pollution that could affect the ability of local workforces and residents to carry out both their work and their day-to-day lives without disruption. These hours are as follows:

• Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm
• Saturday: 8am to 1pm
• Sunday and Public Holidays – no working

These hours apply to all building work unless they are specifically restricted in planning permission.
