What are the most important standards in the diamond drilling industry?

Call us on 0800 998 1056

Diamond drilling plays a critical role in a wide range of sectors, including construction, demolition and mining.

For these projects, diamond drilling allows operatives to achieve precise cuts or openings in concrete, masonry and hard rock. At the same time, this method minimises risks and hazardous side-effects (such as noise, vibration and structural disruption).

Diamond drilling is used in projects where safety is absolutely paramount. Not in terms of minimising risks for construction teams, but also where drilling is necessary in challenging environments. This includes structural elements and confined spaces, for example.

As a result, remaining compliant with diamond drilling standards is absolutely critical.

These standards are designed to ensure safe operation, predictable results, high quality results, and compliance with both technical and regulatory requirements.

In this article, our skilled team of professional diamond drilling specialists have outlined the key standards and frameworks that are used in the diamond drilling industry.

What are the most important standards in the diamond drilling industry?

DCDMA equipment standards

The Diamond Core Drilling Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) sets industry best practice dimensional standards for diamond core drilling equipment.

These standards are particularly important in mineral exploration and geotechnical drilling projects.

The DCDMA standards specify:

  • Drill rod outer and inner diameters
  • Core barrel sizes
  • Thread types and connections
  • Bit compatibility

A, B, N, H and P series

Part of the DCDMA’s set of standards, this series defines configurations and compatibility for drill rod diameters and threads. It does so by providing a set of letters (e.g. NQ, HQ and PQ, for example), to make it easy for both operatives and manufacturers to follow.

The standards are designed to ensure that rods, bits, and core barrels can be successfully used together, even if they come from different manufacturers.

These standards are important because they:

  • Ensure components from different manufacturers can be used interchangeably
  • Sets defined dimensional standards across the industry, including international projects and manufacturers
  • Keeps hole and core sizing consistent and predictable
  • Maximises efficiency and ease of use for operators
  • Minimises the risk of downtime
  • Keeps purchasing completely straightforward

ISO standards for diamond drilling equipment

Another key standards body is The International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The ISO publishes technical standards for a wide range of different sectors and industries, including diamond drilling.

These standards likewise regulate the dimensions and compatibility of diamond drilling equipment.

ISO 10097 (Wireline equipment)

ISO 10097-1 and 10097-2 both govern System A wireline drilling equipment (covering metric and imperial units).

Wireline systems are designed to retrieve the core sample, without requiring removal of the drill string. This makes them extremely effective at improving both project safety and productivity.

The scope of ISO 10097 ensures consistent sizing and compatibility across:

  • Core bits and reaming shells
  • Core lifters and lifter cases
  • Drill rods

ISO 3551 (Rotary core drilling – System A)

ISO 3551-1 and 3551-2 outline dimensional requirements for System A rotary core drilling equipment. This equipment is widely used in drilling hard rocks.

These standardise tool dimensions and ensure compatibility across different manufacturers.

ISO 3552 (Rotary core drilling – System B)

ISO 3552 is very similar to ISO 3551, but covers System B equipment. This makes sure that components are able to “nest” closely together.

It also ensures equipment is suited to specific hole and core diameter ranges.

ISO 8866 (Rotary core drilling – System C)

ISO 8866 defines a third, non-interchangeable system: System C.

This third configuration is not interchangeable with either Systems A or B.

It is designed to ensure minimal clearance between the hole wall and the equipment used, maximising precision and stability in specialised drilling scenarios.

Industry standards and best practices

These standards ensure safe, predictable, reliable and high quality operations across construction and demolition projects.

They clearly outline best practices for industry operatives, setting a centralised universal benchmark.

They also help operatives to maximise project efficiency and procure the right equipment easily.

With these frameworks, diamond drilling remains one of the most precise and dependable drilling methods in the entire industry.

This company really saved my skin today. I've been repeatedly let down by a builder who was supposed to be drilling a big old hole for an extractor fan (kitchen install couldn't go ahead without it). Thankfully I stumbled upon this company who were able to do the job on the same day for a reasonable price. Thank you so much Steven and Chris 🙏

The first visit for a quote was carried out professionally & promptly. The three young men who turned up to carry out the job were pleasant & very hard working.
I cannot praise both the attitude & the diligence shown by all the staff highly enough.

I have no reservations whatsoever in recommending this workforce to anyone requiring an efficient prompt & professional service.
